California College of the Arts (CCA) is an institution of higher education that stands firmly at the nexus of creativity and innovation within the San Francisco landscape. The college is committed to educating a new generation of practitioners who address local and global social issues through collaborative problem-solving, embodying the school’s motto “Make art that matters.”
Operating within CCA, the Center for Art + Public Life (the Center) is an independently run department at the college. The Center believes community engagement is the cornerstone of a creative practice focused on changing the world. For students to fully experience this practice, the Center facilitates mutually beneficial partnerships with community-based organizations outside CCA. We believe innovative and creative solutions to social problems are implemented collaboratively across disciplines with communities.
Since its launch in 2011, the IMPACT Awards program is one of the core initiatives at CCA’s Center for Art and Public Life. To date, over 100 CCA students have implemented 24 community-based projects in 22 cities in 12 different countries, impacting hundreds, if not thousands, of community members worldwide. The IMPACT Awards support multi-disciplinary student-led projects aimed at solving real-world social needs with specific communities. The awards celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of our students, where they apply critical problem-solving skills to develop innovative project proposals and facilitating actionable next steps.
The IMPACT Awards highlight what is best about our CCA students: creative and innovative leaders who understand the value of immersive project-based learning with and for our communities, set within the context of our society’s pressing social needs. The IMPACT Awards remind us of the value of the collaborative creativity practitioner as an agent of social change.
