Remembrance is political at SOMArts’ annual Día de los Muertos Exhibition
Exhibition unveiling this Friday, October 7, 6:00–9:00 pm
Featuring over 50 artists working together to build an immersive environment for reflection and creativity, Day of the Dead at SOMArts insists that we honor the people and places that have been lost.
Now in its 17th year at SOMArts, this year’s theme, A Promise Not to Forget, is a call to remember our ancestors and honor especially those whose lives have been unnecessarily lost due to violence. A Promise Not to Forget will honor the queer and Latinx victims of the tragedy at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando with several altars and interactive installations.
Co-curated by father and son team René and Rio Yañez, Día de los Muertos at SOMArts is emblemmatic of René’s 30-year career of community-building art and activisim in San Francisco.
Help us celebrate this huge community undertaking with an exhibition unveiling this Friday, October 7, $12–15 sliding scale admission, featuring music by Puerto Rican funk, rock and reggae band Manicato, comedy and spoken word by Baruch Porras-Hernandez, and other special guests. Advance tickets are strongly encouraged.
