Mickalene Thomas is a 2015 United States Artists Francie Bishop Good & David Horvitz Fellow, distinguished visual artist, filmmaker, and curator who has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally.

She is known for paintings that combine art-historical, political and pop-cultural references. Her work introduces complex notions of femininity and challenges common definitions of beauty and aesthetic representations of women.

DONALD FORTESCUE (CCA FACULTY) LECTURE: MAKING ART AT THE SOUTH POLE

CCA’s Professor Donald Fortescue spent the austral summer of 2016/17 in Antarctica as a US National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Fellow. At the South Pole, he worked in collaboration with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory – a giant array of photon detectors buried miles under the polar ice. Donald approaches artmaking and astrophysics as two congruent practices of ‘fieldwork’ – both requiring the overcoming of logistical challenges, the deployment of sensitive and largely untested instruments, improvisation and adjustment to accommodate field, and comprehending and interpreting the resulting data.

Donald will talk about his time in Antarctica, outline the development of the various sculptural instruments he deployed at the Pole, and share some of the imagery, video and sound works that he is developing for exhibition.

Join CCA’s Graduate Program in Fine Arts for its 2017 MFA Thesis Exhibition, a two-part series composed of two waves of concurrent group shows, on view March 29 through April 22. The exhibition features the debut work of 35 emerging artists at notable off-campus art venues in the Dogpatch arts district of San Francisco and showcases the diverse visions at the forefront of contemporary art: new installation, painting, sculpture, video, photography, and performance.

Henrik Olesen is best known for his spatial interventions, collage work, mixed-media sculptures, and text-based pieces that explore power structures and social constructions of identity.

His intensively researched projects address subjects such as political normalization, codes of law, natural sciences, distribution of wealth, and the relationship between man and machine. 

The conventions and criminalization of homosexuality are recurring interests for Olesen. Past works have involved compilations of sodomy laws from around the world (Lack of Information, 2001); an atlas of rarely acknowledged expressions of same-sex desire or affection in Western art history (Some Faggy Gestures, 2008); and an imagined portrait of British mathematician Alan Turing, who, despite being credited with inventing the modern computer, was also persecuted for his sexual orientation (How Do I Make Myself a Body, 2009).

CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts presents Black Light, an exhibition curated by CCA’s Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice class of 2017.

The project — under the mentorship of department chair Leigh Markopoulos and associate professor Julian Myers-Szupinska — gathers invited artists, art historians, and founders of institutions to share their perspectives through lectures, screenings, and workshops hosted in a purpose-built meeting space in the gallery.

The project draws its title from artist Faith Ringgold’s landmark Black Light painting series made during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Informed by Ringgold’s legacy as well as the current political climate, the exhibition poses questions about how to reconceptualize cultural representation, engagement, and critique:

  • What spaces for agency are available to black artists today, and by what means have they produced spaces for themselves?
  • What models does history offer artists working now?
  • What role do institutions play?
  • How do communities make themselves visible?
  • Can artists dream the sociopolitical landscape differently, and what forms does this dreaming take?

In response to the recent travel ban of seven Muslim countries and the rise of Islamophobia in the US and across the world, MENA will be hosting Meet “Them”, a two week-long series of programming including presentations, lectures, screenings, interviews, and participatory workshops facilitated by MENA’s member students, alumni, and faculty.

Food and Fables Feast potluck, planned for the opening reception, invites members of Bay Area Middle Eastern and North African communities to bring one dish from their home country, and to share a story about it, allowing us to learn, celebrate and honor one another through a simple, personal and meaningful exchange.

While US courts will be debating the ban’s legality in the coming months, many members of these communities feel confused, alienated, and fearful for their unknown future in this country.

Meet “Them” wishes to introduce “them,” borrowed from the ideology and division of “us vs. them,” which is ever-so-present in today’s America.

Our intention is to give voice to “them,” the many who have been demonized and homogenized as one group — be it Muslims, Arabs, terrorists, refugees, or Immigrants — the “other.”

Through this exhibition project, we wish to create an opportunity for a more empathetic exchange and a broader understanding of those labeled and perceived as enemies through the stories and histories shared by individuals and communities.

The process of weaving is unforgiving, mathematical, and imperfect. There is no painting over. It is like a digital printer, generated from the bottom to the top until an image is formed. Like many weavers, my process is not organic. After drawing, painting, picking palettes for warp and weft (the vertical and horizontal threads), measuring, laying them out on grid paper, I am ready to warp my loom. Though there is room for spontaneity, each warp thread and each section of the painted image is mapped out on paper before I begin. I like the very basic and straightforward technology of a loom. It is ageless.

Weaving color. Yarn as paint. I have BOXES of yarns sorted by color and fiber. I welcome the tension between the natural fibers next to mass-produced artificial neon color yarn or even painted cotton piping. I am interested in the sickly sweet, awkward, uncertain, chromatic, theatrical, and ornate because it mirrors the unhinged world and fragile ecosystem we live in. The more I use these opposing fibers, textures, and palettes, the more it mirrors agitation. Because sometimes we just want to scream!
