SOMA Summer is a unique eight-week program for international artists, curators, critics, and art historians, conducted in English in Mexico City.

SOMA Summer introduces participants to the dynamic art scene of Mexico City through visits to museums, openings, and artists’ studios. Designed to promote intense creative work and open dialogue, the program is built around a series of seminars and workshops led by renowned Mexican and international artists and curators. Participants meet weekly for individual critiques and discussion, as well as public events, site visits, and other activities in and around Mexico City.

SOMA is a space for reconsideration and reflection. Each SOMA Summer is organized around a specific conceptual framework that provides a compelling platform for artists who want to critically analyze their work, while developing new ideas.

Laura Figa and Aline Schwibbe’s works join in YOUR FREEDOM DEPENDS ON ME. Together they touch upon issues of agency, authority, trust, absence and paradox. Both artists exploit the precarious formal limitations they knowingly set up for themselves as a means of inquiring into the contingencies of choice; for where does authority lie when a line built to break is broken?
Harmonizing and colliding, Figa and Schwibbe’s mixed media works speak to one another on the optimism, futility, and danger of these breakages and erasures. They approach the ecstatic possibilities of dislocation through interchangeable depictions of groundedness, flotation and isolation.

Diversity Studies faculty member Sita Kuratomi Bhaumik, who teaches “A Taste of Resistance,” is a conceptual artist who works with craft and food to tell the stories of migration. She is also a writer, educator, and cook with the People’s Kitchen Collective, for which she is a founding member along with Jocelyn Jackson and Saqib Keval.
 
Her work focuses on decolonization, the hierarchy of the senses, and immigration. Raised in Los Angeles and based in Oakland, she is Indian and Japanese Colombian American.

Sita has exhibited, collaborated, and cooked in the United States, Holland, Ireland, Hong Kong, and Mexico. These institutions include Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, The San Jose Museum of Art, The Oakland Museum of California, Southern Exposure, 826 Valencia, Stanford University, The Smithsonian APAC, the Future Food House in Rotterdam and MaD Asia.

Committed to equity and diversity in the arts, Bhaumik has been the art features editor for Hyphen magazine and a board member at Kearny Street Workshop. She has been a Lucas Artist Program resident at Montalvo and an artist in residence at Shankill Castle in Kilkenny, Ireland.

Patricia is a pioneer in universal design, which looks at how design enhanced social engagement. More than 20 years ago she dressed up as an elderly woman and recorded her experience — how she was treated, what was said to her, etc.

She is a dynamic and engaging designer.
