Join CCA’s Graduate Program in Fine Arts for its 2017 MFA Thesis Exhibition, a two-part series composed of two waves of concurrent group shows, on view March 29 through April 22. The exhibition features the debut work of 35 emerging artists at notable off-campus art venues in the Dogpatch arts district of San Francisco and showcases the diverse visions at the forefront of contemporary art: new installation, painting, sculpture, video, photography, and performance.

CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts presents Black Light, an exhibition curated by CCA’s Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice class of 2017.

The project — under the mentorship of department chair Leigh Markopoulos and associate professor Julian Myers-Szupinska — gathers invited artists, art historians, and founders of institutions to share their perspectives through lectures, screenings, and workshops hosted in a purpose-built meeting space in the gallery.

The project draws its title from artist Faith Ringgold’s landmark Black Light painting series made during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Informed by Ringgold’s legacy as well as the current political climate, the exhibition poses questions about how to reconceptualize cultural representation, engagement, and critique:

  • What spaces for agency are available to black artists today, and by what means have they produced spaces for themselves?
  • What models does history offer artists working now?
  • What role do institutions play?
  • How do communities make themselves visible?
  • Can artists dream the sociopolitical landscape differently, and what forms does this dreaming take?

In response to the recent travel ban of seven Muslim countries and the rise of Islamophobia in the US and across the world, MENA will be hosting Meet “Them”, a two week-long series of programming including presentations, lectures, screenings, interviews, and participatory workshops facilitated by MENA’s member students, alumni, and faculty.

Food and Fables Feast potluck, planned for the opening reception, invites members of Bay Area Middle Eastern and North African communities to bring one dish from their home country, and to share a story about it, allowing us to learn, celebrate and honor one another through a simple, personal and meaningful exchange.

While US courts will be debating the ban’s legality in the coming months, many members of these communities feel confused, alienated, and fearful for their unknown future in this country.

Meet “Them” wishes to introduce “them,” borrowed from the ideology and division of “us vs. them,” which is ever-so-present in today’s America.

Our intention is to give voice to “them,” the many who have been demonized and homogenized as one group — be it Muslims, Arabs, terrorists, refugees, or Immigrants — the “other.”

Through this exhibition project, we wish to create an opportunity for a more empathetic exchange and a broader understanding of those labeled and perceived as enemies through the stories and histories shared by individuals and communities.

Black Light converts the gallery space into a forum for conversation and exchange, taking form as a series of events that address the relationship between cultural institutions and black artists. Presented in a purpose–built amphitheater, invited participants draw on their experiences as artists, art historians, and founders of institutions. Lectures, screenings and workshops are introduced and moderated by the graduating students of the CCA Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice. Key participants in these events include:

Root Division is proud to present MFA Now 2017, our biennial juried exhibition and archive publication featuring the works of MFA candidates at 9 of the top Bay Area institutions.

Now in it’s fifth iteration, the MFA Now project provides a platform for looking at Bay Area artists and institutions in order to promote dialogue between programs and to archive current art-making practices and models.

This year’s exhibition includes the work of twenty five artists selected by juror Natalia Mount (Executive Director, ProArts Oakland). Selected from over 153 submissions based on a single image and artist statement, the works included in this exhibition display a quality of content and execution that is indicative of the rigor of advanced art degree programs. Ranging in media from large scale installation, to video, sculpture, photography and painting, the exhibition is a rare glimpse into the developing practices of candidates prior to their thesis presentations.

Root Division is honored to expand the scope of this project to include two additional programs in our 2017 presentation: University of California, Davis, and Santa Cruz. These students’ work will be documented alongside their peers from California College of the Arts, Mills College, San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley in our archive publication.

Laura Figa and Aline Schwibbe’s works join in YOUR FREEDOM DEPENDS ON ME. Together they touch upon issues of agency, authority, trust, absence and paradox. Both artists exploit the precarious formal limitations they knowingly set up for themselves as a means of inquiring into the contingencies of choice; for where does authority lie when a line built to break is broken?
Harmonizing and colliding, Figa and Schwibbe’s mixed media works speak to one another on the optimism, futility, and danger of these breakages and erasures. They approach the ecstatic possibilities of dislocation through interchangeable depictions of groundedness, flotation and isolation.
