Amy Balkin’s work involves land and the geopolitical relationships that frame it. Her project This is the Public Domain (2003+) is an ongoing effort to create a permanent international commons.
Another project, Public Smog (2004+), is a clean-air park in the atmosphere constructed through actions including purchasing and withholding greenhouse gas offsets from use (an ongoing effort for inscription of earth’s atmosphere on the UNESCO World Heritage List).
Her participatory and collaborative projects include A People’s Archive of Sinking and Melting (Amy Balkin et al.), a climate-change archive of the future anterior; Invisible-5 (Balkin, Halbur, Stringfellow, Greenaction and Pond), an environmental justice audio tour of California’s I-5 freeway corridor; and a participatory public reading of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report.
