Kota Ezawa uses animation and drawing processes to create abstractions of existing films, videos, and photographs. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, VA (2015), the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY (2013), the Hayward Gallery Projects Space in London (2007), Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (2005), and other venues. Recent group exhibitions include: Last Year in Marienbad: A Film as Art, Kunsthalle Bremen, Germany (2015); Screen Play: Life in an Animated World, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY (2015); Out of the Ordinary, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (2013); and After Photoshop, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY (2012). Ezawa’s work has been reviewed in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Art in America, Artforum, The San Francisco Chronicle, and other publications. He received a residency fellowship at Villa Kamogawa, Kyoto, Japan in 2013, a Headlands Center for the Arts residency in 2011, the 2006 SECA Art Award, and a 2003 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. From 1990 to 1994 Ezawa studied at Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany. He received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1995 and his MFA from Stanford University in 2003.
