Ted Purves is a writer and artist based in Berkeley, California. He produces socially based projects in collaboration with Susanne Cockrell under the umbrella name of Fieldfaring. The most recent project, The Red Bank Pawpaw Circle, a large public planting project, was completed in Cincinnati in fall 2012.
In 2005 he founded the Social Practice curriculum at CCA and is currently leading its newly created MA in Social Practice and Public Forms graduate program.
He is the author of What We Want is Free: Generosity and Exchange in Recent Art (SUNY Press, 2005). A significantly expanded and revised edition, What We Want Is Free: Critical Exchanges in Recent Art, was released in 2014.
